From Jack to Page: a historical twist

There's a curious detail tucked into the name of these cards. In the Waite-Smith tarot — the reference point for most modern decks — the old Jack was renamed Page. Today, the word page suggests someone subordinate, almost a servant. But in the age of medieval chivalry, being a page was a mark of prestige: it meant a young man of noble birth, sent to serve a knight's lady precisely so he could learn, through daily life at court, the values and skills of that calling. Only once grown and prepared would the page become a squire, and later a knight.

This origin explains why the tarot's Page should never be read as something lesser — he represents active learning, the beginning of a journey still waiting to unfold. The Golden Dawn order, at the end of the 19th century, tried renaming the figures as princess, prince, queen, and mounted king, in an attempt to reorganize the hierarchy of meaning. Waite absorbed much of the Golden Dawn's influence when creating his deck, but chose to keep the traditional names — Page, Knight, Queen, and King — and it was this naming that became popular. Interestingly, in ordinary playing cards (not tarot), the old Jack became jack in English purely to avoid confusing the printed initials of king and knave on the cards — a purely practical change, with no symbolic weight at all.

When the court card is you — and when it's someone else

One of the most common questions from people starting to study these cards is: does this figure represent a real person in my life, or a part of myself? The honest answer is: it depends on the context of the spread. In many readings, a Knight of Swords appearing in a position tied to conflict might genuinely represent someone in the querent's life — a hasty coworker, an impulsive ex-partner. But most of the time, especially in self-discovery spreads, these cards describe a behavior or attitude the querent themselves is currently displaying, even if unconsciously.

Be wary of rigid readings like this card is always a woman or this card is always an older man. This is exactly where many experienced tarot readers recommend caution: court figures carry an archetypal role (child, youth, mother, father), not a fixed identity tied to gender or age. A King of Pentacles can perfectly well describe an extremely pragmatic, provider-minded middle-aged woman; a Queen of Wands can represent a charismatic, magnetic man who leads through enthusiasm.

A contemporary shift worth noting

In recent years, a movement has grown among tarot readers and authors to reconsider how gender is read into the court cards. Historically, Queens were automatically associated with femininity, and Kings and Knights with masculinity — a direct reflection of the patriarchal social structures of the era when these decks were created, not necessarily a universal symbolic truth. Many contemporary tarot readers now prefer a more neutral interpretation of these figures, focusing on the role itself (mature energy, energy in motion, nurturing energy, decision-making energy) rather than tying each card to a specific body.

This shift in perspective doesn't erase tradition — it simply restores something that was always there in the court cards, hidden under layers of custom: the idea that each of these sixteen figures is, above all, a stage of maturity within an element, available for anyone to recognize in themselves, regardless of who they are outside the deck.
